Oyu Tolgoi Chairman recognised for Olympic contribution

The Chairman of the Oyu Tolgoi Board of Directors, Ambassador Batsukh Galsan has been recognised for his contributions to Mongolia’s Olympic success by the Mongolian National Olympic Committee.

Ambassador Batuskh was awarded the Olympic Golden Star, the highest recognition of contributions to the success of Mongolian athletes and the Olympic movement in Mongolia.

During his tenure as Mongolian Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China and to Canada, as well as during his time as Oyu Tolgoi Chairman, Mr Batsukh used diplomatic channels to provide significant support to national athletes during a period when Mongolia achieved considerable Olympic success.

At Beijing 2008, the Mongolian team won two gold and two silver medals and a gold medal in the Paralympics. At London 2012, Mongolia ranked 56 in the medals table, with five medals in total.

Receiving the award, Mr Batsukh commented “I am extremely thankful to the Mongolian National Olympic Committee for recognising my small contribution to Mongolia’s growing Olympic success. Throughout my career, both as an ambassador and as Oyu Tolgoi Chairman, I have tried to contribute to the development and promotion of sport and the Olympic movement. My teams in Canada and China were both focused strongly on supporting the national team in the Olympic Games and we were proud to be part of such success.”

Mr Batsukh was central to Oyu Tolgoi’s support for the company’s Ambassador Athlete, Tsagaanbaatar Khashbaatar in the 2012 Judo competition.In London 2012, a small amount of metal from Oyu Tolgoi samples was included in the Olympic medals as part of Rio Tinto’s position as official metal provider.

Mr Batsukh has previously served as President of the Mongolian U-shu Martial Arts Federation and a board member of the Mongolian Free-wrestling Federation.
